A local SEO checklist for service businesses

August 8, 2026 · Aventus Media

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "roofer in [your town]," you want to be one of the first names they see. That's local SEO. You don't need to be a technical expert — you need to do a handful of things consistently. Here's the checklist.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single biggest local ranking factor and it's free. Claim your profile, fill in every field, choose the right categories, add real photos, and list your service areas and hours. Keep it active with occasional posts and updates.

2. Get reviews — consistently

Volume and recency of Google reviews strongly influence where you rank and whether people click. Ask every happy customer, make it one tap easy, and never buy fake ones. A steady drip of genuine reviews beats a one-time burst.

3. Make sure your name, address, and phone match everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical across your website, Google, and any directories. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt rankings.

4. Build location and service pages

Have a clear page for each core service and each area you serve, with the city and service named naturally in the copy. This is how you rank for specific "[service] in [city]" searches instead of only your hometown.

5. Nail the technical basics

6. Earn a few local links

Links from local directories, suppliers, chambers of commerce, and community sites tell Google you're a real, trusted local business. A few good ones go a long way.

Most of these you can do yourself over a few weekends. If you'd rather have the website side handled — fast, mobile, schema, location pages, and a submitted sitemap done right — that's what Aventus Media builds in.
